How to update your Chromebook for the latest features and keep them safe

  • You can update your Chromebook with the “About Chrome OS” menu.
  • Keeping your Chromebook updates is an important part of protecting them, and checking for updates should be less than a minute.
  • If the update is in progress, you will see the option to restart your Chromebook. Otherwise, you can check for updates and start automatic updates (if any).

Keeping your computer’s operating system up-to-date is a great way to ensure you get the safest version of your operating system.

How to update your Chromebook

Before you try to check for updates, make sure your Chromebook is connected to Wi-Fi.

Once you are done, you will need to do the following to check for updates and install the available updates:

1. Click on the time in the lower right corner of the screen to open the menu.

2. Click the gear icon to open the Settings menu.

3. In the left sidebar, select “About Chrome OS.”

4. If there are ongoing updates, you will see the option to restart after completing your Chromebook.

5. If it is not currently updated, click Check for Updates – if there are updates, it will be automatically downloaded to your Chromebook.

If you use your phone’s Internet for a Chromebook, you’ll also receive an alert about how much data the update will use.
