4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 12 & 11 Reasons You Should

The iOS 12 update could have a significant impact on your device’s performance. Most of you should install the update today, but others might want to wait a few hours, a few days, or, in some cases, a few more weeks before moving your device to the new operating system.

iOS 12 is out of beta and available for all iOS 11-powered iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models, a list that includes the iPhone 5s and iPad Air. Apple’s new operating system comes with a huge list of changes including new features, performance improvements, and security updates.

As expected, the iOS 12 update is a massive download. Those moving from iOS 11.4.1 are looking at a 1GB download while those moving from older versions of iOS could see a larger download size. The features and fixes from those updates are baked into your iOS 12 update.

Apple’s iOS 12 update promises major performance improvements for all models and those of you dealing with issues on iOS 11 could see a huge turnaround. While many of you will see a boost, others will run into bugs and performance issues. The iOS 12 beta squashed countless problems, but issues have slipped into the final release.

If you run into iOS 12 problems you could be on your own for a few days. Apple hasn’t confirmed iOS 12.0.1 though we could see the update roll out in the next few days as Apple works to fix problems and deliver missing iOS 12 features. Apple has confirmed iOS 12.1, but it probably won’t roll out until October.

It’s important to note that you can drop down to iOS 11.4.1 for a limited time. Apple is signing off on the last version of iOS 11 and it will continue to do so for a few more days. The downgrade will close up at some point so there’s incentive to try iOS 12 now and determine if it’s the right move for you and your device. You can’t drop back to anything older than iOS 11.4.1 so those of you moving from older versions of iOS need to be extremely careful making the move.

There are plenty of reasons to install iOS 12 on your phone today. There are also some reasons why you might want to hold back and wait. If you’re currently debating a move to iOS 12, allow us to walk you through the best reasons to, and not to, install iOS 12 right now.

Install iOS 12 for Better Security

If you’re on the fence, here’s one of the best reasons to install iOS 12 right now or in the new future. If you value your device’s security you’ll want to install the iOS 12 update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch sooner rather than later.

The iOS 12 update carries several important security patches that tackle potential exploits. Specifically, there are 16 patches for security issues. You can read about all of them over on Apple’s website.

In addition to those patches, iOS 12 delivers new security features aimed at protecting you and the data you store on your device. These include:

  • Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention in Safari prevents embedded content and social media buttons from tracking cross-site browsing without your permission
  • Suppresses ad retargeting by reducing advertisers’ ability to identify iOS devices uniquely
  • Strong and unique passwords are suggested automatically when creating an account or changing a password in most apps and in Safari
  • Reused passwords are flagged in Settings > Passwords & Accounts
  • Security code AutoFill presents one-time security codes sent over SMS as suggestions in the QuickType bar
  • Sharing passwords with contacts is easier than ever using AirDrop from Passwords & Accounts in Settings
  • Siri supports quickly navigating to a password on an authenticated device

If you skipped any previous versions of iOS 11, you’ll also get the security patches from those updates in your iOS 12 upgrade.

Long story long, if you store sensitive data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you have some really good reasons to upgrade today.
